Feedback to the public consultation on the European Ocean Act
Read Carbon Gap's response to the European Commission's public consultation on the European Ocean Act
We have submitted our response to the European Ocean Act and Maritime Spatial Planning Directive (MSPD) public consultation.
Marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) has the potential of becoming a fundamental pillar of Europe's carbon removal strategy. But realising this potential will require sustained scientific progress, robust governance and a clear policy framework to address the key scientific, environmental, and certification questions that remain in this early-stage family of methods. Our submission sets out three asks: a coherent EU mCDR strategy, stronger ocean observation and MRV, and dedicated research funding.
A fit-for-purpose Ocean Act can unlock the appropriate policy frameworks needed to assess and develop the potential of mCDR methods while upholding robust ethical and environmental standards.
The consultation is still open until 16 July. Don't forget to submit your contribution.
