This cookie policy explains how Carbon Gap LTD ("Carbon Gap", "we", "us") uses cookies and similar technologies on carbongap.org (the "site"). It should be read alongside our privacy notice.

We comply with the EU ePrivacy Directive, the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and the UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) as enforced by the UK Information Commissioner’s Office.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. "Similar technologies" include browser storage mechanisms such as localStorage and sessionStorage, which we use in place of traditional cookies for some purposes. Throughout this policy we refer to all of these as "cookies".

How we use cookies

We keep our use of cookies to a minimum. We do not use advertising cookies, cross-site tracking, or third-party marketing pixels. The cookies we do use fall into two categories:

1. Strictly necessary

These are required for the site to function and do not require your consent. They are set automatically.

Authentication cookies (admin only). When a member of our team signs in to the content management system, our backend provider Supabase sets cookies to keep them logged in. These are not set for ordinary visitors.
Consent preference (cg-cookie-consent). A small entry in your browser’s localStorage that records whether you have accepted or rejected non-essential cookies, so we don’t ask you again on every page. Retention: until you clear it.

2. Analytics (consent required)

These help us understand how visitors interact with our content so we can improve it. They are only set if you click Accept all in our cookie banner.

Video playback analytics (cg_video_session). If you watch a video on the site, we record anonymous milestones (play, 25%, 50%, 75%, completion) so we can see which videos are useful. A random session ID is stored in your browser’s sessionStorage for the duration of your visit and is not linked to your identity. The data is stored on our own infrastructure and is not shared with third parties. Retention: the session ID is deleted when you close your browser tab; aggregated event data is retained for up to 26 months.

Third-party content

Some pages may embed content from third parties (for example, interactive tools hosted on tracker.carbongap.org or files such as PDFs). Where third-party content is loaded, that provider may set its own cookies under its own policy. We aim to flag and gate any such embeds that rely on tracking cookies.

Your choices

When you first visit the site you will see a banner allowing you to Accept all or Reject all non-essential cookies. Rejecting has the same prominence as accepting, and the site works fully either way.

You can change your decision at any time using the Cookie preferences link in the footer of every page. You can also delete cookies and browser storage directly through your browser settings; instructions for the major browsers are linked below:

Your rights

Under the GDPR and UK GDPR you have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict and port the personal data we hold about you, and to object to its processing. To exercise these rights, or to ask any question about this policy, please contact us at [email protected].

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or in the law. The "Last updated" date at the top will always show when it was last revised. Material changes will be communicated through the cookie banner so you can review and re-confirm your preferences.
